Transition from Static to Dynamic Macroscopic Friction in the Framework of the Frenkel-Kontorova Model

چکیده
A new generation of experiments on dry macroscopic friction has revealed that the transition from static to dynamic friction is essentially a spatially and temporally non-uniform process, initiated by a rupture-like detachment front. We show the suitability of the FrenkelKontorova model for describing this transition. The model predicts the existence of two types of detachment fronts, explaining both the variability and abrupt change of velocity observed in experiments. The quantitative relation obtained between the velocity of the detachment front and the ratio of shear to normal stress is consistent with experiments. The model provides a functional dependence between slip velocity and shear stress, and predicts that slip velocity is independent of normal stress. Paradoxically, the transition from static to dynamic friction does not depend explicitly on ether the static or the dynamic friction coefficient, although the beginning and end of transition process are controlled by these coefficients.

The static properties of multi-chain Frenkel–Kontorova model: ground state and static friction
The static properties of the multi-chain Frenkel–Kontorova model are studied numerically. In the case of incommensurate structure, the transition by breaking of analyticity appears in each chain. A new hull function h(x), which also shows the transition by breaking of analyticity, is defined. The static friction (depinning force) depends strongly on the strength of the substrate potential, the ...

Simple models for friction are typically one-dimensional, but real interfaces are two-dimensional. We investigate the effects of the second dimension on static and dynamic friction by using the Frenkel-Kontorova (FK) model. We study the two most straightforward extensions of the FK model to two dimensions and simulate both the static and dynamic properties. We show that the behavior of the stat...
متن کاملSliding Friction in the Frenkel-Kontorova Model
A two-dimensional Frenkel-Kontorova model under a steady external force is used to study the nonlinear sliding friction between flat macroscopic surfaces with a lubricant layer in between. The nonequilibrium properties of the model are simulated by a Brownian molecular dynamics and results are obtained as a function of temperature and a microscopic friction parameter η.

The dragging velocity of a model solid lubricant confined between sliding periodic substrates exhibits a phase transition between two regimes, respectively, with quantized and with continuous lubricant center-of-mass velocity. The transition, occurring for increasing external driving force F ext acting on the lubricant, displays a large hysteresis, and has the features of depinning transitions ...
متن کاملUnderdamped commensurate dynamics in a driven Frenkel-Kontorova-type model.
The dynamics of a Frenkel-Kontorova chain subject to a substrate potential with a multiple-well structure and driven by an external dc force is studied in the underdamped regime. Making a rational choice among the three inherent length scales characterizing the system allows us to consider the possible formation of commensurate structures during sliding over the complex on-site potential. We co...
